Deadline near SCCA Scholarship Program

The deadline for applications for 2004 Southern California Contractors Association (SCCA) scholarships is June 15, 2004, according to Mike Meier, chair of Scholarship Committee. The awards will be announced at the August 11th meeting of the association.

“We have awarded more than $469,000 to 176 students over the past 20 years,” Meier said, “Our committee is dedicated to actively searching for both donors and applicants to make this the best year ever.”

One area of special concentration for the Scholarship Committee will be seeking support for SCCA’s new educational endowment fund, established last year to provide a permanent base of support for the program.

“This endowment program enables the association to develop a permanent source of funding for this important effort to meet the educational needs of our industry,” Meier said. The endowment program is set up as a separate 501.3c not-for-profit organization funded through donations, bequeaths and grants.

In past years SCCA’s Scholarship Committee has relied primarily on grants from the Construction Industry Advancement Funds (CIAF & FCIA). In addition to the industry funds, generous donations from member firms contributed to the success of the scholarship effort.

“Our endowment program, when fully funded, will provide money for more scholarships paid for by the interest earned by the endowment,” said Jim Burton, SCCA executive vice-president. “This will become a self-supporting institution to help improve our industry.”

The scholarships are available for deserving students who are employees or children of any employee or principal of a SCCA member firm. The students may apply for assistance if they will be graduating high school this June or are already attending an accredited college or university.

Applications for a scholarship and endowment fund donation information are available at the SCCA office, 6055 E. Washington Blvd., Ste.200, Los Angeles, CA 90040 or you may call 323-726-3511.
